From the Daily Oklahoman 8/23/1992:
Dolls are not toys where Edith Tice is concerned. They are works of art.
"I like to make them pretty and create different effects with them," said Tice, owner of Classic Doll Creations in Oklahoma City.
"The love of dolls and the making and creating of dolls have a very soul-satisfying effect on a person. " Tice, who once owned a ceramics and porcelain shop, said she made her first doll in 1957 of ceramic clay, never dreaming that dolls would become her vocation.
She later sold the ceramics portion of her business.
"We went strictly to doll reproduction and supplies and teaching doll making classes in 1982," she said.
Classic Doll Creations offers for sale finished reproduction dolls from porcelain and classes and instructions needed in all stages for the finishing of the doll.
Also, Tice, a member of the International Doll Makers Association since 1975, does repair and restoration work on dolls.
"All the dolls from Classic Doll are made by hand, painted, dressed by the doll maker and signed and dated and displayed for sale," she said.
The sewing for the shop is done by professional doll dressmakers, including Tice.
"The artist that sculpts the dolls of today makes the molds and then sells them to us with their own version of how they think the dolls should be dressed," Tice said. "We can use the version they have from their patterns or reproduce the doll to please ourselves. " No two dolls made by hand are alike.
"Each seems to have a different personality of its own," she said.
Some of the dolls in Tice's shop are so real-looking that they can remind customers of people they know, she said.
Edith Tice passed away March 17, 2011.
